SEADOC BASECAMP
LOCATION ORCAS ISLAND, WASHINGTON
TYPE WORKPLACE / RESEARCH
SIZE 3000 SQ/FT
STATUS DESIGN // EST. COMPLETION 2027
The first phase of a master plan, SeaDoc Basecamp transforms an existing pole barn into a dynamic headquarters for a non-profit research organization dedicated to studying the Salish Sea ecosystem. This will serve as a permanent home base and jumping-off point for the small, full-time team of researchers. The design preserves the ‘Red Barn’s’ character while introducing modern functionality: an enclosed entry and gallery welcome visitors, leading to a dramatic double-height hall for collaborative work and community gatherings. Specialized zones—including a dive locker, research workshop—support marine science operations, while an expanded loft with desk space and conference room with views out to Westsound provide light-filled, permanent workspaces for employees. Additionally, the building has been programmed to accommodate local community group use during off hours. The result is a context-sensitive design that blends heritage and innovation, creating a hub for environmental research, community engagement, and marine conservation.
